CENSIPAM started the satellite monitoring of illegal cuts in the Amazonian area using data generated by the Italian satellite constellation COSMO-SkyMed.
RADAR Data were acquired in a bid held under the Project Amazônia SAR, financed by Fundo Amazônia via BNDES and coordinated by Censipam, won by Geoambiente company, in partnership with e-GEOS a joint venture between the Italian Telespazio and the Italian Space Agency for the commercialization of COSMO-SkyMed data.
Satellites acquired more that 1.000 images , over the area. It means more than 2Millions of square kilometers observed in Stripmap mode (40 km x 40 km), with spatial resolution of 3 meters in 2 months.
According to Telespazio, "the use of these techniques on multi-temporal SAR data and multigeometria aims to detect and characterize land cover changes resulting from human activities in the Amazon, where clouds is covering the area but without affecting radar capabilities." The first results of processing picture SipamSAR already show their importance for monitoring deforestation in the Amazon. Here some results .
