Due to the exceptional freezing cold of the last days, the surface of Danube river was frozen at several points from Romania to Hungary along its lengthy path.
Here below a COSMO-SkyMed image acquired on Wednesday 18th January 2017 3:45 a.m. UTC near Calarasi (Romania) which shows ice on the surface of the river about 300 km from the estuary.
Inland carriers losses tens of millions of euro delinking naval traffic after ice formed on the Danube, convoys of ships loaded with goods are waiting for the reopening of naval traffic as soon as winter conditions will permit their movement without risk of endangering their safety and lives of crews. Naval authorities from Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Slovakia have decided, like the Romanian one, to close the traffic on the Danube River for prevention of events caused by ice floes.
